“Fish out of water” is a saying traced back to the 1300s with Chaucer. The expression means someone who is awkward or uncomfortable in his surroundings.
This can be true for Christians. We want to make a difference in the world but don’t know how best to do that. If we challenge every cultural norm that conflicts with Jesus’ teachings, we alienate others rather than draw them close.
How do we stand out as godly examples without being major annoyances?
Some say to fit in with the crowd. Others argue shunning gatherings that don’t align with Christian values. Paul tells us to “hate what is evil and cling to what is good” (Romans 12:9).
Deciding between the two is not easy. Maybe nature has an answer for us: there is a fish that can walk on land!
Walking catfish can breathe air and use their pectoral fins to pull themselves across dry land. Native to southeast Asia, this species was discovered in Florida in 1967.
If fish walk on land, and Jesus walks on water, we as his followers can learn to navigate two worlds.
Oscar Romero wrote: “Those who avoid every thorny subject so as not to bother anyone or cause conflict and difficulty shed no light on the reality in which they live.”
Move out today into unfamiliar territory. Take a chance on feeling awkward so that you can meet new people and show them what seems impossible is achievable.
Today’s Bible verse:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2)
