Halloween sends a scary message about greed to our children.

Halloween sends a scary message about greed to our children.

Costuming littles can be cute and sharing candy can be generous, but Halloween has gotten out of control.

The notion of “Trick or treat” bothers me because this transaction boils down to “Give me something—or else.” What does this teach children about greed and demanding goodies, rather than working for a reward?

Now car loads drop off in strange neighbors to rake in bags of sugary junk. Children navigate symbols of death and gore in front yards as though that “decoration” is normal.

Let’s stop the pretense of any redemption in this charade.

God doesn’t offer us “trick or treat.” He clearly explains in His word what a godly life looks like—honesty, kindness, and integrity. He guides us on straight paths, and we need to do the same for our boys and girls.

Boo! to Halloween and the darkness it’s come to represent.

Today’s Bible verse:

“Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you or turn from their evil ways.” (Nehemiah 9:35)
