Out Fishin'

Saw this young man on a dock as Dad and I boated along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The teen’s focus on his task made me think about the old saying: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

So often we hear about people demanding this or that. The conversation would be healthier to discuss what we are willing to do for ourselves. What positive action do we commit to accomplish, regardless of others’ behaviors?

And though we want to help others, sometimes we cripple by doing too much. Empowering success is the goal. Where can we facilitate accountability so that family members and co-workers step up to gain proficiency instead of relying on a more skilled person to carry the load?

In the Bible, there are lots of fishing stories. Peter fished all night and came up empty-handed until Jesus walked on the scene the next morning. With spiritual guidance, Peter made another attempt and caught so many fish, he had to tow the heavy net to shore. (John 21:1-14)

Today’s prayer:

Dear Lord,
Too often we go charging off to work and forget to ask You for direction. Then we come up empty-handed and feel frustrated. Please teach us where, and how, to fish so that our efforts will be productive. Amen.

Be on the lookout for next week’s post about a series of miracles…
