Allowing room for spontaneity isn’t easy. Deadlines loom. Chores need finishing. We get so focused on where we want to go that we miss where we are.
This happened to me recently after a dinner out with family. We stood in the restaurant parking lot chatting when two young teens zoomed by on bicycles. I almost missed one boy leaning back gracefully to create a unicycle effect with the back tire still spinning forward.
Amazed at his athleticism, I hollered, “Hey! That’s great. Lemme see it again.”
The young man obligingly swerved his bike back toward me. Then he repeated the stunt. I applauded so he circled back.
“How do you keep from getting hurt?” I asked.
He grinned. “I practice a lot on the grass.”
Taking off again, he leaned his torso backward back ever so gently to sweep his fingertips along the asphalt behind him. He looked like a dancer on a fixed stage instead of a person perched on a bike flying across tarmac.
“Do more!” I cheered.
“Watch this,” he said, turning another lap.
He pedaled hard, coasted, then lifted his feet to squat on the seat. Leaning his weight forward on his arms holding the handle bars, he tapped a jig with his toes on the cushion!
That was the last trick I saw before he rode away.
What an uncommon gift in a chance encounter. I still smile at his performance.
