I’ve had a few close calls with death. There have been several automobile collisions that seemed imminent when I closed my eyes, only to open them seconds later with relief that my car passed unscathed.
In another instance, my appendix ruptured while my family and I vacationed in the mountains. The nearest hospital was one hour away. We made it just in time for emergency surgery, and I had great care from total strangers for several days to ensure no infection spread.
One of the most noteworthy incidents occurred in a small plane. An air traffic controller called out our tail number, then barked into our headsets, “Bank hard right –NOW!” The pilot, who was former military, obeyed unquestioningly. Good thing because before I could count “one potato,” another small aircraft zipped past the air space we’d just vacated.
These near misses remind me to treasure the time I have. And even though I have been granted extensions for some reason to continue in the here and now, I know one day my life ends.
I don’t fear death. In fact, these front-row-seat experiences taught me that God will be right there.
Here’s what I learned: Even in crisis, a sense of peace will surround you. God’s presence blunts any terror you might feel. His calm will overtake your mind. You will be able to relax in His arms, no matter the outcome.
Psalm 23:4 tells us: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me….”
Hold to His promise when shadows approach. God will not leave you to face eternity alone.
