Learning to create a human pyramid with 10 athletes—five of whom are standing on water skis racing across waves—requires teamwork. Each person has a role to play and relies on the others.
How crazy would it be if the person on the third tier complained she wanted to be on the base and clambered down in a huff. The rest would topple.
Developing communication, skills, and trust is an ongoing endeavor for members of the Tampa Bay Water Ski Show Team. For more than 30 years, the group has trained high-performance competitors.
Skills range from barefoot skiing to pyramid-building, and the team includes members who specialize in boat driving, equipment maintenance, show announcing, costuming, and choreography.
“Everyone has a part to play, and every one’s part is important to the show as a whole,” Vickie Wilmouth said. “Your teammates depend on you to be at the right place at the right time.”
Wilmouth participates on the team’s board and runs music for the shows. Her husband Jim is a pick-up boat driver for skiers who fall during a routine. Their daughters started skiing in their teens, and now the couple’s teenage grandchildren also participate in shows.
How can you enhance the teams you are part of today? Where can you put the interests of others above a self-serving desire?
Today’s Bible Verse:
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,” (Philippians 2:3 NIV).
